Our working gramophone plays 78 rpm records and provides excellent full-range sound for music from any device via bluetooth. Enjoy a full demonstration below (we recommend having your sound on)...
This striking piece was designed carefully after the gramophones of the 1890s. Unlike nearly all pieces surviving from that era, all its requisite parts are in fine shape. It actually plays 78s (only!) reliably with a clear robust tone coming from the brass horn. Sound from the records is generated with no electricity; it is entirely mechanical and with surprising presence. Though decidedly "low-tech", in our opinion the Gramophone horn actually delivers a better tone the the typical smartphone playing through its built-in speaker.
It also cleverly plays audio from any bluetooth device or via a direct line-in (if you have a non-bluetooth device) with a wonderful sound - our carefully chosen full-range speaker - hidden under the turntable - makes the most of the wooden enclosure to send out a clear and satisfying sound at low or high volume. The sound quality is similar to a bookshelf speaker: full range tone and a very satisfying volume level that can fill a room if not a house.
As with any of our pieces fitted with bluetooth, it works splendidly with Alexa, Google Home, and other "smart speakers." It's a bit of a thrill to command your Gramophone to give you the weather or listen to any other type of music or audio a smart speaker delivers.
The lighting includes five custom-made 40w "Steampuff" type Edison bulbs, and can be adjusted from just barely visible to quite cheery and bright. The horn that holds them can be adjusted side to side to any desired angle.
We provide an extra set of bulbs and record needles as well. Gramophone records are designed to want new steel needles every 2 plays or so to best preserve the record. Replacement steel needles are easy to find and cost about $5 per 100.
Our Edison bulbs are custom-made for Illuminated Objects, and have a slight amber hue and a subtle mirrored finish. They are rated to last 3,000 hrs., and considerably more if dimmed at all. Never worry about replacements - we have thousands, and they are available for a mere $5 each.
All electrical materials used are UL, CE, and/or CCC approved, and the entire unit has been thoroughly tested for safety, reliability and soundness.
Important note: We have two types of horns available; one plain brass (shown in photos and video) and the other decoratively stamped (slightly smaller; see the photos for differences between the two). Please specify your preference. Thank you.
Your satisfaction ensured: Should this piece ever require servicing apart from bulb replacement, accident, or misuse, we will promptly set things right to your satisfaction at no charge save shipping.
